STAR Program FAQs

1. What is the STAR Program?

The Safety Training and Recognition, or STAR program, is a free employer safety development program created by our safety experts. STAR was developed to give you a roadmap to easily create and implement a safety program at your workplace.

2. Who is eligible and when can I register?

If your policy has been written for at least 11 months, your business is eligible to participate in the program. You can sign up for the program within two months of your policy inception or renewal date and you will receive your invitation email 14 days after that date.

3. How will I be notified when it’s time to sign up for the program?

Your invitation email will be sent to the primary contact email address listed on your policy file.

4. What happens if I miss the deadline to sign up?

If you miss the deadline to sign-up for this year’s program, you will have another opportunity to sign up at your next renewal.

5. How do I sign up for the STAR program?

To sign up for the STAR program, you will need to create an account in the State Fund Online Customer Portal. The steps for signing up, depending on whether or not you already have an account in the State Fund Online Customer Portal, can be found in the STAR Program Sign-Up Instructions.

6. Who do I contact if I need help signing up in the Online Customer Portal?

If you need assistance, please contact the Customer Service Center at 1-888-782-8338. They are available Monday through Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.

7. How will the training be delivered?

Training will consist of six online courses that you can take any time in Online Safety University℠, and one four-hour interactive workshop via ZoomThe workshops will be virtual until in-person gatherings are permitted.

8. How do I sign up for the interactive workshop?

Once you have completed the pre-survey assessment and IIPP requirements, you will receive an email from the Safety Support team outlining further instructions on how to sign up for the workshops. The workshops are only available to the number of managers, supervisors, and foremen that you specified when signing up for the STAR Program.

9. What is the learning plan?

The learning plan is a collection of six online courses that need to be completed in State Fund’s Online Safety University. The required courses are different for the Safety Culture and Fall Prevention programs. 10. Can I start taking a course and resume later if I don’t finish it?

A STAR participant may begin and resume courses at their convenience.

11. How long will it take for each supervisor to complete the training?

Supervisors should expect to spend approximately 8-9 hours in training over the course of the first six months of the program. This includes the online courses and the interactive workshop.

12. How long do we have to complete the STAR Program?

STAR is a year-long program; however, the training must be completed within the first six months of the policy term.

13. What are the steps to completing the program?

  1. Within two weeks of registering: Complete the online safety assessment.
  2. Within 3 months: Create your IIPP using our IIPP Builder℠, or upload your existing IIPP.
  3. Within 6 months: All supervisors, managers, foremen, and business owners complete at least four hours of training from the learning plan.
  4. Within 6 months: Attend the online, 2.5-hour interactive workshop with our safety experts and your peers.
  5. Throughout the program: Report all workplace injuries to State Fund within 48 hours after an accident.
  6. Throughout the program: Remain in good standing throughout a full policy year of at least 11 months, including payment of premiums and submission of payroll reports.
  7. Between months 10 and 12: Complete a final post-program assessment.

*Depending on your industry, you will be enrolled into one of the following program tracks: Safety Culture or Fall Prevention. If the governing class code on your workers’ comp policy is Roofing, Carpentry, or Sheet Metal, you will receive training on fall prevention in addition to safety culture.

14. What happens if I miss a program requirement deadline?

If you miss a deadline you will be removed from the STAR program. Program requirement due dates can be viewed in your personalized STAR program dashboard in the Online Customer Portal. To access your dashboard, click on the STAR program quick link after logging into the Customer Portal.

15. How long after I complete the program will I receive recognition?

You will receive a Certificate of Recognition within one month of the conclusion of the program and your policy term.

16. What if I don’t complete the program?

If you do not complete the program, you will have an opportunity to sign up the following year at policy renewal and start the program over.

17. What happens if I cancel my policy while enrolled in the program?

You will have up to 30 days after your policy cancelation to complete the program.
